FOCUS ON: New Schools Initiative
Sort&Save Recycling Operative Steve Shaw tells you all about our new schools initiative, run in conjunction with Rhondda Cynon Taf council.
Things have continued to go from strength to strength at Sort & Save and we have seen our throughput quadruple over the last three months. People are clearly responding to the idea of earning money back on recycling. What is really fantastic is how many people have taken to the idea of donating their rewards towards one of our registered charities, to help them continue their fantastic work. Just as a reminder our customers can now donate their points to the likes of Ty Hafan, Y-Bont, New Hope and Age Concern…and many more!
While the initiative has gone from strength to strength we have continued to work with our partnered councils to source new ways of taking the concept of Sort & Save to more people. We have just begun testing a pilot scheme with Rhondda Cynon Taf and Pontypridd High School which is set to provide significant benefits for all concerned.
The initiative is incredibly simple for the schools to adopt, with Sort & Save recycling bins distributed to the school into which they deposit bags of their sorted and cleaned recyclable material. The bins are emptied regularly, before being weighed at the Sort & Save head depot where rebates are applied to the school’s account.
The Children have taken to the scheme immediately and have already recycled over a tonne of waste in just two weeks! The benefits of the scheme for the school are two-fold, with large reductions to their waste management bills, and a welcome windfall based on offering rebates on all recyclables they send to Sort & Save.
We have also found this is an excellent way of educating the children of the value of recycling. They can see their efforts reaping rewards in the form of added funding for the School to put towards useful equipment to help them continue to invest in the talent of tomorrow!
We have to reserve special thanks and praise to Adrian Evans (Streetcare Department) and Nigel Wheeler (Director of Streetcare) at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, who have been instrumental in taking the scheme to the schools in their area. It is hoped that if the early success of the scheme in Pontypridd High is replicated over the coming weeks we will be rolling out the initiative throughout the borough, so watch this space!
