Welsh Councils Face £200 p/t Fines
Councils in Wales who fail to meet the country's new statutory recycling targets will face fines of £200 a tonne, according to plans launched for consultation at the end of last month.
In November, the Welsh Assembly Government agreed plans to become the first UK government to impose statutory recycling targets on local authorities, which would require them to recycle 52% of waste by 2012/13 and 70% by 2024/25.
And, now it has launched consultation on the details of how the targets will be implemented - including the extent of fines facing councils if they fail to achieve these goals. The penalty - which is still subject to agreement with the Welsh Local Government Association - would see councils fined in relation to the percentage they miss the goal.
